What is HSK Level 1?

HSK Level 1 examination candidates must be able to introduce themselves and hold basic conversations. Have the fluency to apply Chinese vocabulary corresponding to Level 1 of Chinese Language Proficiency Scales For Speakers of Other Languages and Level A1 of the Common European Framework (CEF).

HSK Level 1 Test Expectations

Candidates who have passed the HSK-1 can understand and use some very simple Chinese words and sentences to meet specific communication needs and have the ability to learn Chinese further.

HSK Level 1 Test Components

The whole level 1 test only has two parts and takes about 40 minutes, including 5 minutes for candidates to fill in their personal information.

  1. Listening: Four question types, 20 questions

  2. Reading: Four question types, 20 questions

Pinyin will be provided in the HSK level 1 test. There’s no writing part in the HSK level 1 exam.
