How are your Chinese classes different from those at other language schools?

Our classes are different in every aspect. Every single lesson being taught in Sishu Mandarin (私塾中文) is a collective effort made by our ingenious teachers. Our teachers are all trained by our academic supervisors and mentored by our veteran teachers. And, we meet regularly to advance ourselves professionally.

We’ve also set a high bar for ourselves and strived to provide the highest quality of teaching since the very first day. We do not limit ourselves to teaching textbooks. We always try to tailor our classes according to our students’ learning needs. No matter if you’re a heritage Chinese speaker or someone new to the language, you will find our classes the most comfortable to sit in.

What is special about your one-on-one instruction?

All our private classes will be set at your pace of learning. Our teacher will help you find the most comfortable learning pace. You will get the maximum language input and output in the classroom since you will be the center of our instruction, and all lessons will be modified according to your unique learning style and needs.

Who will be my Chinese teacher?

As soon as an order is placed, we will contact you, asking about your preferences in the class schedule. We will then contact our teachers to find the best match for you.

What’s your teacher's background?

We’re made up of a very young and energetic teaching team. Our teachers are not only forward-thinking but also professionally trained. Most of our teachers have a master’s degree, and many of them have a background in education. We have teachers who graduated from NYU, Columbia, Hunters, Fordham, Peking University, and other prestigious universities in the U.S. and China. Over 90% of our teachers are female. Nearly all of them are native Chinese speakers. We also have teachers who are proficient in other Chinese dialects, such as Cantonese and Fujianese.

How will I be assessed?

You will get big and small assessments and your Chinese learning journey with us. The big assessments are summative, such as baseline assessments or end-of-unit assessments.

The small assessments are the formative ones that will be carried out in every single lesson of yours. The teacher can figure out if you’ve mastered a grammar point by simply having a quick conversation with you. We also use HSK as a benchmark for assessing our students’ level of proficiency.

What Chinese textbook will I use?

We have a couple of our favorite Chinese textbooks, and we use them all. Very often, we don’t rush to the textbook because we want to understand better what our students want and need before deciding which textbook they need to use.

How is my tuition calculated?

A big chunk of your tuition will go to your teacher, and the rest will go to rent, office expenses, administration, and taxes. Our primary goal is to build our reputation and then grow. Our margin per class package is about 10-15%.

Do you offer free lessons?

Yes, please feel free to sign up for a trial lesson on our website. In addition, there’re other ways to join our free Chinese lessons remotely.

Please note that all classes and free trial lessons are appointment-based. No walk-ins are accepted.

Do you offer online Chinese lessons?

Yes, we do offer lessons remotely, and we have students around the globe.

All our online lessons are now at a discounted price, and we have a special offer for all essential workers.

Although our online lessons are available for all levels of Chinese language learners, we recommend beginners and children who are under 12 to take in-person lessons since those classes are proven to be more effective.
