What is Cantopop?
Cantopop (Chinese: 粤语歌曲) is a colloquialism for “Cantonese Pop Music”. Cantopop is one of the more prominent genres of music produced in Hong Kong. While many other forms of music exist, Cantopop is still the most popular in many southern regions of China.
Who Are the Most Famous Cantopop Singers?
The 1980s are known as the golden age of Cantopop, Leslie Cheung (Chinese: 张国荣), George Lam, and Alan Tam (Chinese: 谭咏麟) were the most popular singers of that time. In the 1990s, Jacky Cheung (Chinese: 张学友), Andy Lau (Chinese: 刘德华), Aaron Kwok (Chinese: 郭富城), and Leon Lai (Chinese: 黎明) were the most popular singers, they were also known as the Four Heavenly Kings. In the past decade, they have significantly performed less but participated more in commercials and movies. They have also established successful companies running production houses and doing entertainment management. From time to time, they do concerts tours and are always sold out.
Many artists today are multilingual and are able to speak or sing Cantonese and mandarin. Some of the Cantonese singers from our playlist are household names; others might be more independent. This selection should suit a wide range of tastes, from different genres, ages, and regions.
One very popular singer in recent years is Eason Chan (Chinese: 陈奕迅), a male singer in Hong Kong, and he has been described as a glass of fresh air in the Hong Kong music scene. His album U87 has been recommended by Time magazine as one of the five best Asian albums worth buying.
The Influence of Cantonese Pop Music
Cantonese songs were at its peak in the ’80s and ’90s in China, and most of the classics are from those times. Many of the Cantonese male singers have impacted and inspired generations of listeners and future singers, and it has played a significant role in the development of Mandopop (Chinese: 华语流行音乐).
