What Makes the Chinese Tutors at Sishu Mandarin So Special?
Multiple Rounds of Interview
Each one of the potential candidates has to go through at least three rounds of interviews to become a teacher at Sishu Mandarin (私塾中文).
We always start with a phone interview, and the potential teacher candidate will be asked to do an individual demo lesson teaching the basics of Chinese. Then the the teacher will be invited to teach a small group class for another round of interview.
Only 1 in every 10 candidates will pass all the interviews and be hired. Your teacher made it!
Ivy League Doesn't Apply Here
Some of our students are curious about our teachers' educational backgrounds. Most of our teachers have a degree in teaching or education related majors.
However, we focus more on our teachers’ passion, actual teaching skills, and adaptability. We've seen so many Ivy League graduates who don’t know how to apply their school knowledge into language classrooms and fail to adjust their Chinese lessons to student’s needs.
Ongoing Chinese Training Program
Once a teacher is recruited, they don't just start right away. Every new Chinese teacher at Sishu Mandarin will be supported by a veteran teacher and is required to observe the veteran teacher's classes.
What's more, the new recruits will teach another series of demo lessons in order to get enough feedback before taking you on as a formal student.
Classroom Observations
You might see some of our other teachers visiting your class from time to time. They are there to make sure our teaching is consistent across the board. Observation is a core piece of our teacher-assessment process to ensure we have the best teaching practices.
An Academic Learning and Teaching Environment
We have regular meetings for professional development, scholarly books for teachers to read, and constant support from each other. Sishu Mandarin is not only a great place for students to learn but also a nurturing environment for teachers to grow professionally.
